Many teleost fish species are protogynous, meaning that fertile females can become fertile males. One model holds that protogyny occurs when body size confers a greater reproductive advantage on males than on females. In teleost fish, body size is irrelevant to female reproduction, but among males (which tend to be larger than females), only individuals comparatively large enough to defend territory reproduce. An individual could thus maximize its lifetime reproductive success by staying female when small and becoming male upon reaching a critical size threshold.

Investigating protogyny in teleost fish, Alexander Goikoetxea and colleagues placed captured spotty wrasses of typical size distributions into two mixed-sex tanks. During the breeding season, they removed all males from tank 1 but none from tank 2. They observed that sexual change began in 81 percent of females in tank 1 but in no females in tank 2.
