To produce batik, an Indonesian textile that originated as early as the 6th century CE, an artist creates patterns on fabric by skillfully applying wax to the surface and then dyeing it. Traditionally, the artist draws on the cloth using a canting, a pen-shaped tool that applies wax in fine lines or dots. To expedite this laborious process, the cap, a copper stamp that applies preset wax patterns, was introduced. Although the cap made the process of producing batiks much quicker, the canting is often preferred because it results in unique pieces.
